IN THE FLOW

This month we’re talking about the importance of designing a space that flows and the benefits that has as well as what certain blockages mean. Enjoy!

RESIDENTIAL

When we think about flow, we imagine things happening smoothly and seamlessly. The same concept applies to your house. When you have your space set up in such a way that it flows, day to day tasks will come easier to you, making them more enjoyable, and by default lifting your mood. So what are the ways we can improve the flow of our home?

The first thing that comes to mind is floor plan. When you move through your home, do you feel that you do so easily and in a way that feels natural? OR, like many people, do you find yourself stepping around pieces of furniture, notice your rug getting caught every time you open the door, or stubbing your toe on the same chair everyday? This is an interruption of the flow of the space – and probably a source of frustration throughout your day. Try rearranging things in a way that helps you move freely and undisturbed. You’ll find yourself feeling lighter and enjoying your home more.

Another thing that interrupts our flow at home is clutter. A cluttered house does not allow the energy to flow through your home. Because our homes are a reflection of us, this could signify blockages in our own personal lives that need to be addressed.

Closets are a common place where clutter occurs. Clutter in closets is equally important as the closet signifies our subconscious and things we may not be aware of. Cluttered closet? This is a sign to go deep within yourself and perhaps uncover some internal blocks or traumas you have not dealt with. So let’s deal with it. Donate clothing that you no longer wear, or store what is out of season – you’ll find getting dressed to be less stressful when you’re not rifling through clothing that doesn’t serve you.

One more small tweak that you can make to improve flow is to make the objects you use every day readily available and easily accessible. Organize cabinets so that the pot you use most often is towards the front. Put spices that you use to cook frequently in a cabinet close to the stove rather than across the kitchen. You’ll find the day to day flowing more easily and you might even find yourself in a happier state of mind!

COMMERCIAL

Just like a home, an office needs to have a flow as well. When an office space is set up in a way that is efficient, it creates a flow and increases productivity and happiness of employees as well.

One overlooked element of flow in an office is where do employees drop their coats as they walk in? Do they throw them over the backs of their chairs, creating a messy look and an annoyance for themselves throughout the day? A dedicated (and even better – hidden) coat rack near the entrance of the office sets the tone for the day and creates a flow from the moment employees and guests walk in the door.

Another thing that disrupts flow in the office is an inadequate workspace. Workspaces that are too small, or don’t allow for proper organization create frustration. Likewise, clutter at desks or in shared storage spaces, like supply closets, also interupt flow, and eat up time as employees need to rifle through papers and supplies to find what they need.

Desks should also be spaced properly. A workspace that has approrpate flow leaves lots of room for chairs to be pushed in and out of desks without hitting other people or walls behind them.

And finally, to really create flow, an office space needs variable work areas. This means enclosed spaces for private meetings, enough desk space for those who are working independently, and large enough meeting spaces where those involved can sit comfortably, listen well, take notes and collaborate.

When an office space flows properly, employees are more efficient, and enjoy their days much more, creating an atmosphere of pride, community and partnership.
